overview
As opportunities in “old media” become more limited, the number of food notable blogs—and food writers who make a name for themselves through their blogs—keeps growing every day. Blogs give voice to writers outside the editorial purview of print glossies and newspaper columns. Armed with only a digital camera, a computer and an internet connection, a blogger can create a restaurant review that reaches millions of readers or publish a recipe invented in a home kitchen, without writers, testers or food stylists.
But what gives bloggers equal, easy access to communication tools is what also makes for an extremely crowded marketplace. You may have a point of view worth sharing, but how do you single yourself out from the thousands of food blogs already out there? And once you’ve captured your readers’ attention, how do you hold onto it?
Food Blogging with Steven Shaw is designed to help you create a blog that won’t get lost in the shuffle. Budding journalists, veteran print writers and devoted hobbyists (and anyone in between) will get practical insight on building or improving a blog, from the ground up. You’ll learn the basics behind harnessing low-cost technology to produce web-friendly content, and then explore strategies for taking your efforts to the next level by promoting it to the public, tracking performance and even monetizing your blog.
Hands-on coaching, group discussion and special lectures by guest speakers—including award-winning journalist Alan Richman—will reinforce concepts learned in class. As an ongoing class assignment, students will create and maintain their own blogs, adding daily entries that will be evaluated by their instructor and peers.
